Both run a bot 24/7. The difference is who administers the machine and how you are billed.

Short answer

  • Pick Railway if you want to push to GitHub and be done: builds, logs, variables and a public HTTPS domain are handled for you.
  • Pick Vultr if you are comfortable with Linux and want a fixed monthly price, root access and several bots on one server.

Cost thinking

A small idle bot on Railway often stays inside the usage included in Hobby, but a memory leak or a busy AI worker raises the bill: set a usage limit. On Vultr the price does not move with load, but you pay even when the bot is idle and you spend your own time on maintenance. We do not publish an exact per-bot Railway estimate because it depends on your RAM and CPU use: read it from Railway's usage page after a day of running.

Decision checklist

  1. Can you patch a Linux server monthly? If not, Railway.
  2. Running three or more small bots? A single VPS is usually simpler to budget.
  3. Need a webhook endpoint today with no domain? Railway's generated domain is quickest.
  4. Need root for custom binaries, a local database or a VPN? Vultr.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Discord bot run on Railway 24/7?

Yes. A service on a paid plan keeps running; the gateway connection is outbound so no public domain is needed.

Is a $3.50 Vultr instance enough?

For one lightweight Telegram or Discord bot it can be; AI or browser automation needs more RAM. Measure memory with your real workload.

Which one is cheaper?

It depends on usage. Below the included usage Railway Hobby costs $5/month; Vultr costs its fixed price no matter what. Compare after measuring.
